November 14, World Diabetes Day: Eyes on Dallas’ story

According to the International Diabetes Federation, 1 in 2 people currently live with undiagnosed diabetes – that’s a shockingly high number of people who are without adequate care. With this in mind, 2016’s World Diabetes Day’s theme is “Eyes on Diabetes”, emphasising the importance of proactive screening to catch type 2 diabetes in its early stages and allow for treatment to reduce the risk of complications.
Tunstall Healthcare’s connected health solutions are helping to address this need for better monitoring by putting technology in the hands of the users themselves. Let’s check out how this solution has helped Dallas, an 85 year old woman with diabetes, heart failure, hypertension, dyspnoea and fatigue on top of high blood pressure.
Dallas’ story
Dallas was finding that living with so many health conditions was a big challenge – she was constantly needing to visit her GP and specialist and was desperate for a solution to help better keep track of vitals right from her home.
A family member recommended Tunstall to Dallas, and she was given an in-home connected health solution – technology that allowed her to proactively monitor her conditions. From the comfort of her own home, Dallas was able to send her results to her registered nurse (RN) who was able to analyse her behaviours like her diet. The RN saw that Dallas was eating far too many carbohydrates which was causing her blood glucose levels to spike.
“Before the connected health program I had no idea what was going on with my diabetes.”
From these readings, the RN was able to give Dallas a new diet and exercise plan – a strategy which ultimately helped lower her blood sugar levels. “Before the connected health program I had no idea what was going on with my diabetes, now I feel more independent and in charge. It really does make you more aware,” said Dallas.
Most importantly however, Dallas’ RN was able to identify renal deterioration before it turned into renal failure. Thanks to her connected health technology, and through the relationship developed with her RN, Dallas was able to avoid serious complications and maintain her wellbeing.
